Developed as a select resort by Sir Richard Cooper and largely expanded after 1886. The area south of Frinton Gates was laid out with detached houses set along broad tree lined avenues and has preserved a unique local character.
Lined with colourful old-style beach huts, the tranquil sandy beach and promenade has remained largely uncommercialised. Just above the beachline, the Greensward is an expanse of well kept grassland area making it an ideal location for picnics.
Connaught Avenue, often referred to as “Bond Street of East Anglia” offers a selection of boutiques and independent shops.
A collection of Art Deco houses featuring architecture by Oliver Hill and assisted by the likes of Wells Coates, Maxwell Fry, Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff and Frederick Gibberd. An example of one of the properties is the Round House and, as its name suggests, is an entirely circular 1930s Grade II-listed property. This extraordinary house forms part of a group of individually designed Modernist houses on the Frinton Park Estate designed by architect Oliver Hill in 1934. Out of 12 Oliver Hill designs, now only 10 exist.
The Church of Old St. Mary contains some interesting panels of William Morris stained glass in the East window, designed by Burne Jones.
