Ramsey

Situated just three miles west of Harwich, Ramsey is a picturesque village in the Tendring district of Essex, offering a blend of rural tranquillity and fascinating heritage.  With its elevated position overlooking the River Stour and easy access to coastal paths, Ramsey is a perfect destination for walkers, history enthusiasts, and those seeking a peaceful escape.

Ramsey’s roots stretch back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded under the names Michaelstou and Rameseia. Over time, these lands were divided into seven manors, including Ramsey Hall, Michaelstowe, and Foulton.

The village grew around agriculture and milling, with the Ramsey Tide Mill once a key feature near Mill Farm. Historic buildings such as Bridgefoot Farm, White House Farm, and Mill Farm date from the 16th century and showcase Tudor and Jacobean architecture.

The parish church, St. Michael’s, stands proudly on a hill and features Decorated and Perpendicular Gothic styles, with a tower housing five bells. The register dates back to 1644.

Ramsey is a gateway to scenic countryside and estuary walks:
Hamford Water Circular Walk – 3½–4 hours. Starting near the Castle Inn, this route follows footpaths and seawalls through saltmarsh and estuary landscapes, offering views of Harwich docks and wildlife-rich mudflats. 

Woodland and River Ramble – 6.5 km, easy. Combines meadows, farmland, and riverside paths with saltmarsh habitats. 

Stour Wood Stroll – 4.2 km, easy. A short walk through ancient woodland and quiet meadows. 

Essex Way – Ramsey lies close to the final stretch of this 81-mile long-distance trail from Epping to Harwich, offering estuary views and varied terrain.
