Situated just three miles west of Harwich, Ramsey is a picturesque village in the Tendring district of Essex, offering a blend of rural tranquillity and fascinating heritage. Ramsey’s roots stretch back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded under the names Michaelstou and Rameseia. Over time, these lands were divided into seven manors, including Ramsey Hall, Michaelstowe, and Foulton.
The village grew around agriculture and milling, with the Ramsey Tide Mill once a key feature near Mill Farm. Historic buildings such as Bridgefoot Farm, White House Farm, and Mill Farm date from the 16th century and showcase Tudor and Jacobean architecture.
The parish church, St. Michael’s, stands proudly on a hill and features Decorated and Perpendicular Gothic styles, with a tower housing five bells. The register dates back to 1644.
