The town centre itself is home to a number of historic and character buildings which also reflects the town’s rich past. The high street is not dominated by chain retailers and offers a selection of independent, family run businesses and shops which include specialist food, gifts, crafts, beauty, clothing, footwear, florist and electrical goods. The Kingsway Plaza is home to a selection of multi-use retail units offering a range of items.
In recent years the Dovercourt Town Centre has seen a transformation and had major investment into its appearance to improve the visitor experience and support local businesses.
Dovercourt Bay is a superb stretch of sandy beach. With a promenade that stretches for miles, walking, cycling and water based activities can all be enjoyed. There are also spectacular views of Felixstowe as well as the Harwich and Languard Forts. The bay is home to two leading lights, which were used to aid shipping around Britain.
The State-of-the-Art Fitness centre, Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles, offers a range of facilities from swimming, strength training & high-energy classes.
Bobbit’s Hole Nature Reserve is a small nature reserve with a small pond. The area is used by many and varied organisations including schools, youth groups, photography and art groups and has even hosted open-air theatre and music events.
Various events take place locally throughout the year including the annual Tour de Tendring Cycle ride.
The town has been settled from Prehistoric times. Late Bronze Age axe heads were found at upper Dovercourt. To the Romans, the town was an important source of building stone ‘Septaria’, taken from the cliffs. The modern town largely developed in Victorian times as a fashionable resort.
