Revisiting the Essex Witch Trials – Augmented Reality Walking Trail
Discover history brought to life through art on our unique augmented reality walking trail. At each of the 12 stops, you can unlock a digital artwork created by Essex-based artist Sian Fan, inspired by creative writing pieces that re‑imagine the stories of the women caught up in the 1645 Essex witch trials. Each artwork blends these personal stories with the surrounding landscape to create an immersive, interactive experience.Using the trail is simple:
Just scan the QR code at each stop with your device’s camera. You’ll be taken directly to the webpage for that location. To view the augmented reality artworks, you’ll need Facebook or Instagram installed — both free to download from your app store, as are QR reader apps if your device doesn’t already have one.Look out for the QR code signs at each marked point on the map. Every sign displays the title of the artwork and the names of the women whose stories are commemorated at that location.
On each trail page, you can:
Launch the digital artwork via Facebook or Instagram
Read or listen to the historical and creative accounts of the women featured
Explore how their stories inspired the visual pieces you see on-screenThis trail invites you to step into the past while viewing the landscape through a modern creative lens, bringing hidden histories into the present day.
