Little Clacton is a historic village offering a peaceful escape with easy access to the coast and countryside. Its rural character, fascinating heritage, and network of footpaths make it a great destination for walkers and history enthusiasts alike.
Little Clacton dates back to the 11th century, when settlers branched off from the track between St Osyth and Little Holland. The land was divided into two estates owned by the Bovill and Engayne families, whose halls Bovills Hall and Gidea Hall still mark the village’s historic core. The village appears in the Domesday Book, and its name derives from Old English, meaning “farmstead or enclosure of Clacc.”
The parish church, St. James, is an architectural gem. Built in the 12th century, it features Norman stonework, a timber porch from the 14th century, and a 15th-century bell turret. Inside, visitors can admire medieval windows and carved details. Other historic landmarks include the Methodist Chapel (1851), the old school (1868, now an art studio), and the Blacksmith’s Arms, a former coaching inn with a colourful past including a notorious fight in 1806 between locals and Highland soldiers.
